The Future of your Cell Phone as I see it.

Femtocell Technology-
Currently mobile phone providers in Europe are experimenting with femtocell Technology. And to describe it simply it takes your home broadband connection and turns it into a functioning Cellular tower. So not only can you have five bars while at home but your neighbors have the ability to hop across these "cells" or nodes like they do towers now. The difference between this technology and existing services is that it works with existing handsets and the customer literally becomes a repeater for the cellular network. No special handset needed, just a box and broadband. The effect of this will be huge, less time needed deploying towers and more time spent by cell providers enhancing service.

Faster Mobile Broadband-
The speed of Internet connection to your handset is growing at a rapid pace, and I would expect that in the near future networking with your phone will be more common.. More rich content more multimedia more Internet, cable and movie subscription services etc. Imagine being able to watch any show you want from your phone or any movie for that matter. This stuff already exists for people that have fast phones and home broadband. But we have barely scratched the surface.

Richly connected to the people around you-
I would expect to see more multimedia capabilities of phones. We haven't even scratched the surface of what a phone with a camera can do. for example I think that mobile blogging, or life blogging will become more common with a camera connected to your phone and connected to the Internet in real time. People that you authorize will be able to go to your blog, log in if you choose and watch you. Or see what you see with camera's inbedded in eyeware. I would expect the wealthy to launch something like a virtual reality show soon. Then one day it will become available to the rest of us. The technology will be of course equipped with safeguards to allow sleep modes and user banning etc.. In my view anyone in the future will have the ability to make a reality show about themselves and the people around them.

Location aware social networking-
Social web applications like face book in the very near future will become more location aware. They will use both GPS and cell tower triangulation to give the people you are friends with your exact location, and also guide them if they/you choose to your location. They will ask questions like, you have a friend within 3000 yards, would you like to ask permission to know where? Imagine driving down the street and your car notifies you that your cell phone has detected three business partners your sister and a friend you haven't seen in ten years at the local coffee shop.. It asks if you would like to notify them by text message or voice that you will be coming, or ignore that they are there. The key to this technology is going to be that only people on your designated location knowledge allow list will be able to know where you are. So for example if someone is bothering you, you can simply no longer provide that person your location. Imagine knowing when all of your employees are in the parking lot, or a mile down the street. It will be cool.

Phones Ringing in new ways-
Grand central, another fantastic free service of Google, allows people to call me and I can have it routed to any phone I want. Imagine being able to assign your family a phone number and if a person wanted to leave a message or text the whole family all they have to do is dial one number. Phone numbers will follow you in the future, certain numbers will only ring while you are at work or home. When you are at work or in your car your business line rings, but goes to voicemail while home or at certain times. The evolution of this "one number to rule them all" idea will be interesting.

Spam folders and call baring options.
Your phones in the very near future will have spam caller boxes and much more power in phone call filtering. This is a MUST have, if you don't want a number calling you and you no longer want private callers your phone will filter this information out for you in the near future.

Voicemail to text technology.
When in the world are we going to get rid of voicemail on mobile phones. Having a voicemail box that simply converts the message to text and sends it to me is so much better. I HATE checking voicemail, and can't wait for services like this to start.

Cameras on phones connected to the Internet will become more "aware" of what they see. In the near future software on our phones will analyze and provide us Internet hyperlinks to what they see. So for example walking through downtown Kent and pointing your phone at a building would show its website phone number profiles of people inside.. If this technology works with face recognition people would be able to point their phone at you and see your online journal, pictures of your family, or ask for permission to join your facebook.
